I have a brand new, bever-before-seen piece I’m working on as we speak in next month’s Gag Me With A Toon group show at WWA gallery. This is the most awesome news, because I’ve wanted to be part of this exhibition since it launched four years ago and now I’m finally able to dedicate myself to doing just that. I won’t spoil the surprise, but let’s just say I’m taking a beloved character I grew up with and doing very bad things to it. And look at all these cool cats I’ll be showing with:

Good morning, universe.

In just four short days I’ll be cramming my cargo into a little rocket and zooming off to Yantaló. The pile of books and supplies at my front door has gone from this:

On Monday, I’ll do my best to post photos of the contents. it’s time for some serious suitcase Tetris! And maybe more prickly pear juice.

LA is filled with all manner of cactus and this fruit is fairly easy to find in parks and stores alike. Some troublesome varieties, however, are exceptionally difficult to juice because their delicate pulp is loaded with hard seeds – one literally has to mash the stuff in a net strainer to achieve the above result.

While it was worth it, as soon as Ales and I drank the delicious results, I embarked on a search for a bottled version – somehow to no avail. If anyone here is in the know, please share.

Amidst the D4RT prep, I’ve been whipping the house into shape. It had fallen into considerable disarray while I was busy and it just so happens that, two days after my return from Peru, my mother-in-law is coming to visit for the first time from the Czech Republic. Besides, I don’t come home to a mess if I can help it.

We’ve rearranged the bedroom as part of this process, and purchased my very first [!] dining table, which isn’t here yet.

There were a few moments to visit with friends, too. One is a skilled mixologist and blew my mind with a masterly array of what I affectionately call “old man drinks”.

It’s science!

We also went to FYF, got long-overdue Thai massages, watched lots of movies in bed and spent time with Micron. I got trip vaccinations which made my arm feel like lead for 24 hours, shot a few SG sets and did some other stuff, some of which was documented in the field.

And last, but certainly not least, I have officially reached hair nirvana, thanks to Vivka’s dyeing skills. She did such an incredible job that the process will receive its own post when I have the time. I leave you with this.

It’s Day 2 of Biorequiem Beauty Week ™, and I have doggedly scrolled to the very beginning of my Formspring questions page, selecting all the non-overlapping beauty questions I could manage to respond to in a relatively sane and timely fashion. Having done so, I realized that there are still too many and decided to make hair today’s topic, because, well, that covers over 65% of the beauty questions I’ve received in the past year. Not answering hair questions for at least one year, so I hope you get your answers here.

I’ve always wanted to dye my hair, but I’m afraid that it won’t suit me. How do you decide whether a color will look good before you go ahead and dye your hair?

There are a few ways to approach this decision. You might be tempted to try testing hair colors in Photoshop, but don’t. It’s actually the least accurate method of matching color to skin tone, because no photo will capture your skin and all its nuances correctly. Instead, try on a few wigs at a costume shop, or hold up a few of those little hair color swatches to your face, and check yourself out in the mirror.

Additionally, there are certain ground rules I’ve learned to stick to over the course of mine and my friends’ adventures in hair science. Here’s a super-basic breakdown of what to avoid in rainbow hair colors, organized by four skin tone groups. Of course there is a vast variety of skin colors out there, but this system covers quite a few.

Cool pale
Avoid: cherry or candy reds, as they will make your skin ruddy.
Embrace: “Natural” and orange reds, very dark cherry reds, blonds, grays, greens, especially emerald and blue-based greens, all blues, purple, pink, bright yellow, orange.

Medium-pale with olive undertones to Medium-dark
Avoid: yellowy blonds, yellowy greens, “natural” reds, orange reds, candy reds, and turquoise-based blue.
Embrace: white and ash blond, cool silver, cobalt, violet, purple, cherry and other blue-based reds, emerald green.

Dark
Congratulations, you can get away with anything!

Could you point me in the direction of a very easy to understand, step-by-step hair dye tutorial? It’s going to be my first time dealing with dyes and I’m going dark brown to blue.

You’re in for quite the experience, but are also in luck, because once you get there, the maintenance will be less painful, than if you were going light.

1. Bleach
I suggest Sally’s 40 Volume Creme Developer and L’Oreal Quick Blue powder bleach. Mix them together in a non-metallic bowl until your bleach has the consistency of cake batter [not frosting]. Wearing latex gloves, use a tinting brush, and brush on bleach, root to tip, in sections, starting at the back of your head. Do not rub into scalp, and expect your scalp to tingle anyway. Leave bleach on for 45 minutes, then rinse with warm water, and shampoo well. Do not condition yet. Is your hair this color?

If so, it’s light enough to dye. If not, repeat step 1, leaving the bleach mixture on for no more than 30 minutes. Check it at 20, just to make sure – sometimes that’s enough.

2. Dye
Just follow the directions here. You don’t have to leave the color in overnight – two hours is just fine!

My natural hair is black. how do i reach white hair?

I mostly answered this here. Since then, I’ve also discovered all sorts of toners, beyond just toning shampoo, which do wonders. Wella’s White Lady and Silver Lady are amazing. The keys are to use a mild developer with your toner, and to wait  a few days between bleaching and toning, in order to let your hair recover. Brace yourself: having naturally black hair may require up to 5 bleaching sessions, lots of repairing hair masks, and saintly patience. Also, maintenance positively sucks, proceed with caution.

I absolutely adore your white hair and I was wondering how you managed to get the blue out. I tried to bleach mine out and it just went in further and further into my cuticles. I think I should give up.

Honestly, it took forever. Months!

I just let my hair fade, and fade, then I tinted it a frosty periwinkle, then I let it fade some more until I bleached the ever-living fuck out of it. It was quite faded by the time I picked up the bleach, so my advice? Patience, young padawan. Shampoo, condition, enjoy all the variations, until your roots are an inch and a half to two inches. Then try bleaching again, and so forth. I’m actually looking at undergoing this process again fairly soon, as I’m planing on transitioning into something very streaky in a month or two. Good luck!

Which leave in products / hairspray do you use to give your hair such volume?

My holy grails, currently: Big Sexy Hair Spray N’ Play for lots of control and volume + Schwarzkopf Professional Dust N’ Powder for texture without stiffness.

When you went from blue hair to silver, was it really damaged? What did you use to revive it?

It was, and I did lots of hot olive oil masks. Just warm up a few tablespoons of olive oil in the microwave, then get it all over your hair whichever way suits you best – just saturate it well. Cover with a shower cap or plastic wrap, and then with a towel. Leave on for up to three hours, then shampoo and condition.

Also, I routinely saturate my hair with jojoba oil before shampooing, which does actual magic, and avoid blow-drying at all costs.

Is your hair naturally curly? Have you experienced loss of curl from bleaching and what would you do about it?

Yes and yes. See above.

You’ve had your hair in many colors; how do you keep your eyeglasses clear of stains?

I cover the rims with Vaseline when dyeing.

I’m worried about dyeing my hair in sections. how do you ensure your dyes stay separate if you’re dying more than one color?

See this and elaborate. Remember, if you’re using several vegetable/semi-permanent dyes, they will all bleed together a little during shampooing, unless you have the time and patience to wash each section separately!

The best hair straightener in your opinion?

I swear by my 1″ Revlon Perfect Heat ceramic straightener.

I’m a Korean male with a typical square head and exaggerated square jaw. Something atypical? I have naturally wavy/curly hair that rivals Mufasa, King of the Jungle. Do u have any tips on how how to tame the mane, or maybe suggest a decent haircut/style?

Could you please get the Eraserhead cut? I’m only half joking, actually. If a ‘fro or hobbit ringlets aren’t your thing, you might do well with a long undercut. Alternately, you could go short, clean-but-fun, or even dreadlocked! My suggestions:

I will soon be shaving my head for a cancer fundraiser to around this length, and I was wondering how you dealt with it when it reached 1-4 inches long? (thanks!)

What perfume/bodyspray/lotion scents are your favorite to wear, and do they vary for different situations? (ie: daily casual, night out, formal, etc)?

I go between Viktor and Rolf’s Antidote, Viktor and Rolf’s Flowerbomb, Black Currant mixed with Bonfire from I Hate Perfume, Cherry Cordial from I Hate Perfume, and a variety of baked goods scents from all over – cookies, chocolate, vanilla, butterscotch – I love it all! I don’t consider any occasion more worthy of a scent than another, so there’s no real system in place. I’m at home in my pajamas at this very moment, and wearing Flowerbomb, just because.

Have you ever been accused of undergoing plastic surgery? Have you actually gone under the knife?

I’m not sure that plastic surgery is something one’s “accused of”, per se, but the answer is, not really. I’ve had a few people ask whether I’ve had breast implants, which, no, I have not. I’m terrified of cosmetic implants, actually, but would be up for all manner of electronic modules – camera eyes, UNF!

As far as having gone under the knife, the answer is never, which isn’t to say I wouldn’t later in life, if my financial situation was such that cosmetic surgery wouldn’t make a dent. As things are, however, there are so many other things I’d rather spend my money on, that it’s a non-issue. Also, I’m rather fond of aging naturally at this moment, because fighting age? Ultimately, you’re fighting a losing battle, no matter how wealthy. No grace in that.

Do you have a favorite country to visit/one you want to visit?

Favorite? Impossible. I have so much more to explore before I can even consider answering that. As far as current plans, I may be going to Rome in the spring, then my husband and I are planning a trip to Southwest India immediately after that, and a sort of mass exodus to Iceland the following year. I’m incredibly excited about our trip to India, because it’s so unlike anywhere either of us has traveled. Spending two weeks immersed in and exploring this culture together will be an unparalleled experience. More on that once we have our tickets and some idea of specifics.

How were you in school, particularly high school? Did you ever want to drop out? I understand that you went to a high school for the arts, was that your first high school?

I did want to drop out. In fact, I even took my state proficiency test my junior year, but, after passing, decided to stay in school anyway. LACHSA was certainly not my first high school, it was my fourth. I started at Pacific Palisades HS here in LA, then went through two different schools in Denver, CO before ending up back in LA to finish. I hate Denver, by the way.

How do you deal with the concept of morality?

Did you mean “mortality”? Because I’m undecided on that. Same goes for morality, though two key principles do apply: 1. Avoid lying 2. Don’t hurt the people I love unless absolutely necessary, or unless they say “please” real nice-like.

Do you sell any of your self portraits?

Right now, this collection of select 36FAIL images is available. They come in sets of three which is kind of odd, but if you have a couple of friends who might like them, it works out well.

Will I be able to take a picture with you or even ask for an autograph at this upcoming 2011 IMATS in which Amy’s Sugarpill line will be presented?

Certainly, but I have to admit to having no comprehension of the autograph concept itself. I do it from time to time, but why? WHYEEE??!!

I’m a girl who’s had short hair for years, and people give me a hard time about it, because it’s “not what girls are supposed to look like”. I was wondering if anyone has criticized you when you’ve opted for a boyish haircut, and how you dealt with it?

I’ve had people givin’ me lip about my aesthetic decisions my entire life, literally. It hasn’t been about having short hair though, aside from a few ooold boyfriends’ remarks, which I never placed much stock in. And that’s how I deal with it – it’s my head and, frankly, fuck the rest. It’s almost 2011, and if the people around you think short hair is “for boys”, I suggest you move.

Due to circumstances beyond my control I will be dropping out of college at the end of this semester, in the middle of my sophomore year. I will have no chance to return. I feel so lost and scared. I understand that you dropped out of college; any advice?

Don’t stress, and work. Spend a year [not longer] turning nothing down. Work like a rabid firemonkey, and your portfolio and/or resume will speak for themselves in no time.

Do you have any recommendations for Red hair dye? My new job doesn’t approve of my N’Rage Crimson Red hair, do you know of any brands that aren’t natural looking but will pass as looking like a Professional?

Feria, but you’ll have to touch it up fairly often, as it fades rapidly.

How would you feel about somebody changing his/her/its name to a distant resemblance of yours (in form, not in essence), as a permanent sign of being inspired by you?

My purpose behind everything I do here is to inspire people to seek out their true selves and to pursue their own individuality with utmost ferocity. When I see folks imitating even with the purest of intentions, I think they missed the point.

Borscht. Yay or nay?

Hell yes! I have yet to make it myself, but perhaps this winter it shall finally be time.

                          

The crimson-locked siren below is my friend, Stephanie Inagaki. Stephanie is an artist and head designer of coveted jewelry label, Miyu Decay.

Stephanie has very, very, very long hair. A few weeks ago she called me up and asked if I could dye it red. All of it. I laughed, hung up, caught my breath and called back, saying that I’ll dye some of it, but that’s the best I can offer. So we got to work and took a few photos in the process, to show you how it’s done.

A lot of peeps with super-long hair are anxious about adding streaks themselves, but I’m here to tell you you don’t need no steenkin’ salon if you’ve got a few hours and an extra pair of hands around. The method below should also be useful for other hair lengths.

THE TOOLS

• Plastic bowl
• Dye applicator brush
• Rubber gloves
• Aluminum foil
• Plastic wrap
• Hair clips
• 40 volume creme developer
• Clear Blue powder bleach
• Manic Panic hair color
• Deep conditioner
• Red wine, fresh bread, fine cheeses and gourmet hummus help, but are not necessary

THE METHOD
• Mix up your bleach and developer
• Separate the section of hair to be dyed
• Please foil under the section
• Have the dye-ee hold the foil, while the dye-er diligently applies bleach mix
• Once all desired hair is well-saturated with bleach, fold foil over, then roll up

• Cover foiled chunk with plastic wrap re prevent drip, then clip in place
• Wait no more than 45 minutes, then shampoo and rinse

• Repeat if necessary

• Shampoo well, but do not condition
• Using the same foil technique, apply dye, and roll up

• Rinse dye out with cold water, until it runs clear, or almost clear
• Pile on the deep conditioner, and leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes – your hair’s been through a lot
• Rinse with cold water, and you’re all done!
• The desired level of lightness depends on what color you intend to use after. Reds and oranges require the least amount of bleaching, but lighter, cooler colors need more
• Leave dye on for at least an hour and a half. Since we’re using vegetable dye, this is safe because it stains your hair without damage

Because we dyed the entire top section of Stepahine’s hair, when worn down it gives the look of individual streaks. And that’s how you save your time, your money, and your sanity by avoiding the salon. Until the future!

                          

The cut took about 45 minutes, the color [or lack there of] about an hour and half. It’s still not done – I didn’t want to burn my scalp, so the back is baby chick yellow for now, but it’s close. I used cheap-o clippers, which I had to take apart and put back together halfway through the process, on the sides and shears on the rest, adding texture with an eyebrow razor. It’s pretty much exactly like it was two years ago, just [almost] white.

There is something so incredibly sexy about seeing myself like this. First, there’s the blend of textures – short, long, soft, a little prickly. Then, the look itself. Then the style itself – androgynous, even boyish, but with that bombshell platinum adding layers of UNF.

I love it.

I´m intrigued by the glimpses of your living space. Any chance for more photos of your home?

Timely question! This space just might be done with very soon. It’s almost inconceivable. I lived here when I went to high school, and again for the past nine [!] years. It’s seen enough roommates, drama, and action for several lifetimes. This apartment is saturated with so, so many memories that it almost feels like a part of me. It is a part of me, really, except that it’s a “me” that existed and will continue to exist in another time. In the present, Ales and I want to make a home in a place that’s ours, not mine, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. So, to answer your question, there will be moving photos and, eventually, photos of our new quarters.

Were you ever an angsty teenager with sub-par self confidence? If so, how did you get past it and what helped you grow into the person you are today? Any advice for some of us angsty teens?

1. Mhmm.

2. Hesitated to answer this one, because I don’t exactly want the mothers of the internet on my tail, but ultimately I’m not here to skim over the big stuff, so pull up a chair, and grampa Zo will tell you a little tale. See, I did it by putting myself through some deep, reckless, irresponsible shit. For years, at that. From the time I was a kid and until about the age of 20, I felt a compulsion to experience and understand things I knew no one would ever teach me at home, or in school, but I sensed were lurking just below the surface. Things I knew couldn’t be taught, and had to be lived, sonny! Having sufficiently traversed the aforementioned shit-mountain, I emerged aware of my capacity to endure, and thus self-assured.

3. Obviously, I do not advise anyone follow that route. Here is some advice I wish I was given, instead: do what you feel, as long as you maintain a balance and can be sure you’re not hurting anyone. That usually means a degree of openness and a lot of self-examination. Avoidance is the enemy.

Also, read more books and eat your greens. Grampa has spoken.

I’m pretty down in the dumps now, and you feel like a strong (emotionally) lady. Have you been heartbroken before? (If yes) How did you get over it?

I’m sorry to be answering this late. It’s been Coilhouse Issue 05 madness and I haven’t peeped at Formspring in a bit. But let me say now, BOY, have I. It’s tough to conceive the depths of the dumps of my past, dude. I’ve been in megadumps of such proportions that I couldn’t even begin to describe them here, nor should I, really. Suffice to say that I got over it because I had to, and not always in the most constructive ways. These days, I do have a specific way I get over things, and that’s by looking at the bigger picture, always. Living is all we humans get, and the less of it we spend being heartbroken, the better. It can be an exquisite, lovely pain, but indulging in it too much is just like any overindulgence – you end up missing the point.

How many hours do you sleep regularly?

At least 6, ideally 8. I love early mornings and have a hard time staying asleep once awake, and my husband wakes up at 5:30am, which generally springs me to life, too. On undersleepy days, I try to nap for an hour around 1 or 2pm. Often unsuccessfully.

What´s the idea or inspiration behind the “reflection” style photos?

I’m pasting my statement from the glorious fail of a contest that was The Power of Self, because it sums things up:

I try to pin down and preserve dream states, like the moment when you look at the warm sun through the red of your closed eyelids and drift. The ambiguous in-between minutes separating lucidity and sleep. The tricks our eyes play in dim light and then, the way we wonder if the world is quietly opening its shutters to grant us a peek at another side and then another. Often, the hours of friendly discourse over too much coffee on the subject of what might happen if every reflective surface was Lewis Caroll’s looking glass.

Were you planning on selling more clothing on Ebay any time soon?

As a matter of fact yes, NOW. I listed a bunch yesterday, though two sold already. Ch-ch-check it out!

Where did you learn the delicious make-up skills? Self-taught? I’m an avid fan of your “Blush Response” segment on your website. It gives me inspiration to do strange things to my face!

Nyarrf, thanks! Can we have some pictures of the strange things you’ve done to your face? Entirely self-taught when it comes to beauty make up, and apprenticed with an established artist in special effects make up, prosthetics, exploding heads and the like a few years ago, too.

First things first. Ales and I thank you for all the wonderful, warm wishes and wedding congratulations. We’ve been going back and reading though the announcement‘s comments and, well, you guys are the best.

Second, it turns out I have no time to write this week either! D’oh. However! I have stuck to my Spartan Resolution, donated two massive bags of clothes to Goodwill, and am beginning to list stuff on Ebay in an effort to rid myself of Too Many Clothes.  Tons of really nice things at ridiculous, rock-bottom prices, because I want this stuff out of my apartment, NOW.

And third!

Me and Clint had the big fun at the Gen Art Alumni Celebration that kicked off LA’s Fashion Week, and the evidence is up over at Chinashop.

And last, but certainly not least, I have new hair. More or less. Of course it’s still blue, but now with streaks and varying color chunks throughout – wanted lighter hair for the summer. Actually, I asked for dusty, subdued colors but I ain’t gonna complain about mermaid hair. It will fade and I’ll do dusty the next round. Also, the photo below is a little on the dark side.

In the mix: azure, cerulean, sapphire, onyx, silver. This jewel-toned concoction took five hours to achieve and hell no, I didn’t do it myself. The ladies at Sirens salon on Melrose are to blame. How am I going to maintain it? No idea, but it will be fun to try!

How Do You Keep Your Skin Looking So Perfect?

Thank you – my skin isn’t perfect, in that I have scars from piercings and the neurotic cats of my childhood, but I do have a few tricks up my sleeve!

1. Sleep. Getting enough sleep is a crucial step to looking and feeling your best. As you all probably know, people who sleep enough and regularly [not too much, not too little] live longer, look younger and are generally healthier than those with erratic sleep patterns.
2. Water. You hear it everywhere and by Einstein’s balls it’s TRUE! Drink water whenever you can, literally.
3. Hyaluronic Serum. Whuhh? Oh yes, you heard it here first! Rejoice my squidlings, because this stuff will do things to your skin you didn’t know where possible! I’ve been wanting to tell everyone about it for months, but I wanted to give it a good test run before recommending it. And now – I recommend it. In my experience, this product is not so good under makeup so I try to use it before bed or on no makeup days [I have plenty of those, don't gasp at me that way]. This is the brand I’ve been using. You can thank me later. On make up days, I use Oil of Olay Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream.
4. Avoid processed food. You already know it’s bad for you, so just stop. Eating real food is good for every aspect of your being. If your insides are stuffed with frozen pizzas, gummy bears and hot pockets, your skin will show it.

Does your hair dye ever rub off on things, like pillowcases or clothing? I can never seem to keep my color really vibrant without it leaving it’s mark everywhere.

Honestly? Possibly, but I wouldn’t know it. My bedsheets are all dark and so are my towels. It does help to rinse your hair with ice-cold water  after shampoo and conditioner, to close those follicles god and proper. I’ve heard of people rinsing with vinegar to help keep the color stay put, but haven’t personally tried it.

Do you gravitate towards certain colors? I understand black is the ultimate color. Do you handle other colors (red, green, etc.) well and can you wear them?

Actually, I firmly believe that anyone can wear any color they want, as long as they do it with style and confidence. As for me, I currently prefer wearing mostly black and gray, but have handled color just fine in the past, as demonstrated by these old-school style photos:

What places do you typically purchase your make-up from, especially foundation? Your make-up and skin are flawless!

In my recent Blush Response, I said that I’ve been using Prestige’s Skin Loving Minerals powder foundation. It’s half the price of Bare Escentuals and more matte, too.  When I can, however, I go for Bare Escentuals, and I never-ever use liquid or non-mineral foundation. You can find Prestige at drug stores that carry the brand, and I buy Bare Escentuals at Sephora.

You mentioned that you sometimes curl your hair with a curling iron. How do you manage the shorter hair in the back with that a-line? I can’t ever get it right.

I curl it under, in rows, starting from the bottom up, then I make it a little messy and go. Looks better than leaving tight curls back there – those make me think of The Golden Girls.

I would love, if you have the time, to tell me how you did your hair, particularly in the Sugarpill post and Style Dispatch 008. Product, pointers, how you dried it, or an essential step. I would really appreciate any advice.

1. Air dry! Always air dry.
2. While wet, distribute a little bit of TiGi’s Curls Rock Curl Amplifier through hair. Scrunch.
