I highly recommend going to a Master Pancake show if you can- it's like Mystery Science Theatre but live. They did an awesome send-up of the Matrix, which might still be playing while you're there. The food is great there too. Try the Guinness Milkshake (which sounds weird, but you won't regret it). I'm going to the Interactive portion but I always check out the free shows because there are so many during the week - you can see lots of bands even if you don't have a wristband or cash :) Be sure to go to Hey Cupcake on South Congress & get yourself some cupcake love. I'm living there now going to grad school at UT. SXSW should be awesome, and I wish my grad student income would allow me to attend. Alas, all my money goes towards getting to nerdy academic conferences. If you haven't been to Austin before you should go see a show at the Alamo Drafthouse, a Master Pancake viewing if possible. Also, check out UT's Blanton Museum of Art. It's quite impressive. We have lots of other goodies that aren't on display such, as Peruvian penis pots. Austin is good times.
